Valencia close in on Olympiakos player Zlatko Zahovic
Posted: July 11, 2000 at 22:40 PM EST (27:40 AM GMT)

Champions League finalist Valencia C.F. are very close in signing Olympiakos's Slovenian player Zlatko Zahovic. The player himself has agreed with the offer put forward by the Spanish club but he still needs to get Olympiakos to agree to the transfer terms as well before anything becomes solid.

"Everything will be more clear within the next few days, but it is very likely that I will be playing in Spain this season although I have many offers from different clubs in Europe as well," said Zahovic in a press conference that he gave on Tuesday (6/11) and then added, "I believe that I can play very good soccer in Spain and especially with Real Madrid or Barcelona."

Valencia is the favorite among all clubs in signing the 28-year old "troublesome" Olympiakos player although last year was beaten by Olympiakos in the transfer race. The Spanish club is offering the Slovenian national player 550 million drachmas per year but the problem lies with Olympiakos since there is a 1 billion drachma difference with Valencia's offer. Valencia is offering Olympiakos 2.8 billion drachmas for acquiring the player but the "reds" are asking for 3.8 billion drachmas in order to "take back" their 5 billion drachmas that they gave for the player which includes the 1.35 billion drachmas that the player received for his three year contract.
