Greek finance ministry official charged in tax case

A top Greek finance ministry official was charged on Monday with failing to collect fines imposed on firms for smuggling, court officials said, the second case to embarrass the debt-ridden government in under a week.
Greece is battling a huge crisis and has promised its international creditors it will tackle widespread corruption, blamed for a large part of its economic woes.
Yannis Kapeleris, a secretary general who was handling the tax and customs portfolio and had been working in the financial crimes unit, was accused of not collecting fines imposed on fuel and heating oil suppliers for smuggling.
Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos asked for his resignation after he was charged. Kapeleris denies wrongdoing.

Blaming monks and minor officials is fine but the real test will be when the top cats are called on the carpet for the waste and mismanagement of public funds that have caused the present crisis.
Or are they exempt due to Parliamentary immunity and statute of limitations laws?

It's astonishing that a monk executes a property transaction with the State and he is arrested for defrauding the State - how about all those employed by the State, where / who was on the other side of this transaction and why are they not being held accountable. The Greek ruling elite are immune from all prosecution / wrong-doing - what a joke and insult to the rest of us.

What blows one's mind is that Greeks don't seem to be bothered by the immunity that politicians enjoy. Or at least they are not vocalizing it enough.

No political accountability whatsoever during this whole crisis - put the monk in jail, how offensive to the educated public. The respective ruling parties over the past decade or so where are they now and where is their value add...oh yeah "let's have elections". What a mess and we can't blame the Germans, Americans or British for this one - we wrote the cheques and we spent the money.
